Talking to AI properly

Artificial Intelligence

35–50 min + optional 15 min

Work at your pace. Take a break between stages; there is no countdown.

You need: paper, a pencil and this lab. A helper is welcome for reading and discussion.

Connect to what you know

You checked an answer. Now improve the request that comes before it.

Understand it, step by step

  1. 1

A useful prompt names the task: explain, compare or suggest. “Help me” leaves the task unclear.

  2. 2

Context tells the helper what matters, such as a beginner audience and a topic. Use invented examples instead of names, addresses or passwords.

  3. 3

The output format makes the answer easier to use: three steps, a table or a short explanation. A clearer prompt still cannot guarantee a correct answer.

Watch a worked example

Task: explain why a bulb needs a closed circuit. Context: beginner, using a battery and a switch. Format: three short steps and one prediction question. This is more testable than “Tell me electricity”.

Pause and predict

What would be missing if you removed the context?
